Retrospective Study on Perioperative Cephalosporins and Fortirnicin^(®) Treatment in Neurosurgical Operation

Abstract

|
The authors have retrospectively, examined the occurrence of postoperative wound infection following neurosurgical operations in 229 patients who received perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis with one of 2 cephalosporins and astromicin sulfate (Fortimicin®). Wound infections occurred in two cases, so the overall rate of postoperative wound infection was 0.87%. The potential side effects of aminoglycoside such as nephrotoxicity or ototoxicity were not noticed with Fortimicin® administration. During prophylactic antibiotic treatment nine. cases of infections at other organs developed. Perioperative antibiotics treatment may contribute to decrease postoperative wound infections in neurosurgical patients.
